I’ve always been weirdly obsessed with the Christmas number one chart battle. Ever since I first listened to the UK top 40 on Christmas Day, 1994, and being genuinely upset that the Power Rangers weren’t number one. It’s since been my party trick to be able to name every single Christmas number one within a few seconds (though I struggle with getting the right Beatles ones in order).

It’s been quite the decade of change since 2010, but even when it comes to just the charts, a lot has gone on. Sure, generally speaking most people don’t exactly care about the charts like they used to, but in strange and difficult times, it’s somewhat pleasant to know that certain traditions like the Christmas number one still exists, and we can remember the days of Slade, Mud, Band Aid, Cliff Richard and the like…

Join me for these seven episodes of Christmas Number One battles, and Merry Christmas one and all!

All chart data comes from The Official Charts Company.
